If you plan to attend the Master Class Novel Workshop taught by Meredith Sue Willis be sure to bring a page of your work with you. Drop off this page at the registration desk by 6:00 Friday evening. Also bring 15 copies of this scene to class.
Master Class Workshop in the Novel
This session will have two parts. Part I will discuss and have exercises for considering structure and pacing in the novel. Pacing will include both how a scene moves and how a book moves from scene to scene.
The second half of the session will look closely at up to 5 one page samples written by class participants. Participants should bring (15) copies of a one-page scene with a conflict from a novel-in-process. The teacher will choose five to discuss, but we will also exchange copies so that everyone gets at least one or two responses.
The scenes will be analyzed for pacing, integration of dialogue and action, and other issues.
Meredith Sue Willis is a writer from West Virginia. Meredith Sue was born in Clarksburg and raised in Shinnston, in Harrison County, where her father’s family came to work for Consolidation Coal Company. An Adjunct Assistant Professor of Creative Writing at New York University’s School of Professional Studies, she has published fiction with Scribners’, HarperCollins, West Virginia University Press, Mercury House, Ohio University Press, and others. Her most recent book of literary Appalachian stories was praised in Booklist as a “finely crafted collection…worth reading twice.” Meredith Sue also writes books about writing, and novels for young people.
