Take A Hike – Poetry Workshop
Pearl S. Buck Birthplace – Hillsboro, WV
Thursday, June 27, 2019 – 1:00 – 4:00 PM
On Thursday, June 27, 2019, the Pearl S. Buck Birthplace (located in Hillsboro, WV), with support from The Calvin W. Price Appalachian Enrichment Series, will host a “Take a Hike” poetry workshop lead by Kari Gunter-Seymour, Poet Laureate of Athens Ohio. The workshop will be held in the Sydenstricker Cabin on the property and is open to the public (pre-registration is recommended but not required), all levels of writers are welcomed. A $10.00 donation is suggested for attendance. Light refreshments and drinks will be provided. Please bring paper, pen and a digital camera and/or smart phone. Join poet, Kari Gunter-Seymour for a hands-on poetry workshop. At the beginning of this workshop participants will take a brief hike around the grounds surrounding the Pearl S. Buck birthplace. Using your camera or smart phone, each participant will capture an image or images, one of which will be used as inspiration to write a poem. The S.M.I.L.E. technique will be introduced to help enhance the thought process and sharpen focus. A selection of Pearl S. Buck quotes will be available (provided) to incorporate into the poems or use as epigraphs to help set the stage or suggest a theme.
Three times a pushcart nominee, Kari Gunter-Seymour’s chapbook Serving was nominated for a 2018 Ohioana Award. Her work is included in the 2019 Visible Poetry Project and won top honors from Still: The Journal, BlackBerry Peach and the Hocking Hills Poetry Festival poetry contests.
