Mary Lucille DeBerry reads from her new book

Alice Saw the Beauty

Alice Saw the Beauty

Mary Lucille DeBerry will read from her second collection of poetry, Alice Saw the Beauty, on Saturday, January 10 at a book launch scheduled for 2:00 p.m. at the Monongalia Arts Center, 107 High Street, in Morgantown. The event is free and open to the public.

The title of the new book is also that of one of the poems within it—about a single copper bedspring given to the poet by former Randolph County Extension Agent, Alice Torner (1903-1979), who helped found the Mountain Weavers Guild. Other poems celebrate a primitive rolling pin, an elegant vase created by Susan Ting, vintage photographs, and nature’s offerings: ginkgo leaves, fan-shaped fungus, dandelions and daffodils.

Winston Fuller, former WVU Professor, says, “Mary Lucille DeBerry writes a poetry of attention to the exotica of the close at hand. Alice Saw the Beauty is the poetry of a West Virginian making a West Virginia life.” Ida Stewart, author of Gloss (2011 winner of the Perugia Press Prize) adds, “The book is also tethered to history, each poem not written but tied like a knot on a string of time that connects the past to the present.”

The new collection of poems—with Foreword by Ann Hogsett--can be found at the Harrisville branch of the Ritchie County Library and at Berdine’s Five and Dime. Program chairs are invited to schedule the author to read her work at meetings of local organizations.

Pre-Orders now open for Llewellyn McKernan’s new poetry chapbook “Pencil Memory”

Recent WV Writers Podcast featured reader Llewellyn McKernan will have a new chapbook of poetry entitled Pencil Memory published December 3, 2010. This is a limited edition collection, and the number of pre-publication sales will determine the size of the press run, so please reserve your copy now. Also feel free to send copies of this e-mail on to others who might be interested.

Here is what some nationally known poets are saying about Pencil Memory.

"I've long admired Llewellyn McKernan's bold, somewhat terrifying, and often thrilling poems. She turns her spiky imagination to one of the writer's most basic tools, and plays deft variations on that many-angled instrument. I especially like how the pencil itself composes the final movement of this inventive chapbook sonata." -- Michael McFee, author of Shinemaster.

"In this marvelous sheaf, every poem makes its point, wise or wistful, always wittily. Llewellyn McKernan has had such serious fun making her lines that we wholly engage with them, following her lead as it loops across the page with pert good humor. Delightful. Indelible." Fred Chappell, author of Shadow Box.
