Leslie Hager book signing at Taylor Books (REMINDER)

WVW member Leslie Hager will be signing copies of her novel Coincidence at Taylor Books tomorrow, April 23 from 1-3 p.m.

Coincidence is described as:
American woman, Samantha “Sam” Montgomery had no idea what the stranger meant when he asked: “So, what’s the craic?” Little did she know on that hot, humid South Carolina summer night, that it would be the question that would change her life forever.

Sam is stuck in a boring job and with a string of bad relationships under her belt, isn’t where she imagined she would be at this point in her life. Additionally, she has to cope with the sudden death of her beloved grandfather who passed away just weeks after beginning to investigate a letter belonging to his mother—a letter which only fuels questions about his mother’s mysterious past and why she suddenly fled her homeland of Ireland in the middle of the night nearly eighty years ago.

Sam, desperate for some much needed relaxation after the past several months of grieving her grandfather’s death and her unlucky in love past, heads away on her annual girl’s beach trip with her best friend, Kate Mason, only to discover what awaits her at the beach is far from relaxing. When she, a charming Irishman named Sean and an angry red-headed woman cross paths, Sam finds her sanity slowly spinning out of control as she stumbles her way through a mission which takes her across the Atlantic Ocean to Lifford and Derry, Ireland in search of love and answers to her family’s puzzling history.

In celebration of the release of Writers Workshop of Horror—a new book that focuses solely on the craft of writing—several contributors to the book will make a one-time appearance in the Mountain State—making it a mini horror writer’s convention, of sorts. The acclaimed writers will be meeting and greeting Borders visitors from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m.

Among those scheduled to appear will be Gary A. Braunbeck, Lucy Snyder, Elizabeth Massie, Tim Waggoner, Jason Sizemore, C. Cameron Fuller, Brian J. Hatcher, and Michael Knost.
“We’ve assembled a dream-team of horror writers for this weekend event—many are Stoker Award winners and represent the top storytellers in the business,” said Keith Davis, of Woodland Press.

All the participants will be signing special copies of Writers Workshop of Horror as well as other titles they each have penned, during this gathering. They will also be available to answer questions from the public during an informal panel forum.

“This may be the literary event of the year. We’re extremely fortunate to have these authors at our bookstore. This is a rare, rare treat for book lovers in West Virginia,” said Lill Neace, of Borders.

Besides their contribution to Writers Workshop of Horror, the authors represented at the event have written many of the most popular books currently available in the horror and fantasy genre. In addition, each has contributed works to the popular regional series, Legends of the Mountain State, also published by Woodland Press.

Among the authors of Writers Workshop of Horror are several accomplished West Virginians, including Logan County resident Michael Knost, who also serves as editor of this title as well as the Legends of the Mountain State series. Other in-state contributors include Charleston residents Brian J. Hatcher and G. Cameron Fuller.

Gary A. Braunbeck, of Columbus, Ohio, has many other published titles including Far Dark Fields; In Silent Graves; Keepers; Coffin County; Mr. Hands; X3; Masques V; The Little Orange Book of Odd Stories; and Fear in a Handful of Dust: Horror as a Way of Life.

Braunbeck’s wife, Lucy Snyder, has authored other titles including Spellbent; Installing Linux on a Dead Badger, Sparks and Shadows, and Chimeric Machines.

Works by Shenandoah Valley, Virginia, author Elizabeth Massie include Sineater; Power of Persuasion; Wire Mesh Mothers; The Fight for Right; 1609: Winter of the Dead; 1863: A House Divided; 1870: Not With Our Blood; The Little Magenta Book of Mean Stories; and she co-authored The Secret of the Silver Shoes; The Tudors: Thy Will Be Done; and The Tudors: King Takes Queen.

Tim Waggoner, who hails from Dayton, Ohio, has written many titles, including Thieves of Blood; Forge of the Mind Slayers; Sea of Death; Darkness Wakes; Pandora Drive; The Harmony Society; Like Death; Valhalla; All Too Surreal; and Godfire.

Lewisburg Bookstore features WVW author Rody Johnson

Rody Johnson will chat with readers and sign copies of “The Rise and Fall of Dodgertown” during Lewisburg's First Friday, June 6 from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. at the Open Book, on Washington Street in downtown Lewisburg. He is also the author of “In Their Footsteps,” a West Virginia history, and “Different Battles,” the story of a U-boat attack off the Florida coast during World War II. He is currently working on a book on wind energy.

“The Rise and Fall of Dodgertown” is the story of the most hallowed spring training site in baseball. A review in the “Los Angeles Times” said: “For Dodger fans, spring training has meant Vero Beach. The club has been based in the sleepy Florida beach town since 1948, when they were the Boys of Summer from Brooklyn. The symbiotic relationship between the team and the town is the basis for Rody Johnson's “The Rise and Fall of Dodgertown.”

“I've been to Dodgertown many times and I know how special it is,” said Fay Vincent, former Commissioner, Major League Baseball. “There's no other spring training site quite like it. Rody Johnson was there from the beginning so he's able to take us on an entertaining trip down through Dodgertown's long and colorful history.”

Granted special access to the team's archives and personal interviews with players, management, and staff, Rody Johnson presents a fascinating and remarkable history of the sometimes rocky relationship between the city and the team. Beginning with the signing of Jackie Robinson in 1946 and ending with the recent departure of the Dodgers to Arizona, “The Rise and Fall of Dodgertown” traces the changes in baseball and society for more than a half century. It is a story of community, passion, and the beauty of an American sport.

The book was the basis for an ESPN piece on Dodgertown and was featured on Fox and CBS TV affiliates in Florida, nation-wide XM Radio, and Japanese national television.

Rody Johnson is a long--time resident of Vero Beach, was born in Charleston, and spends his summers in Lewisburg.
